IRWC 2012, "Birth and Economics," events:

1. Birth & Economics Poll Contest

In celebration of International Week For Respecting Childbirth, "Birth and Economics," which is May 21-27, 2012, Natural Nesters will be promoting childbirth awareness in the community by hosting a birth and economics poll contest on April 1- May 27. Participants must answer all four poll questions at https://www.facebook.com/naturalnesters before the deadline on May 27, 2012 to have their name entered in the drawing. The winner will be announced the following week and awarded a gift bag and $25 gift card to Natural Nesters.

Average facility childbirth charges vary depending on the place of birth (home, birth center, or hospital), the way you give birth (vaginal or cesarean birth), and whether there are complications. As you can see below, the average hospital charge for an uncomplicated vaginal birth is about five times the average birth center charge for a vaginal birth. Hospital charges skyrocket when there are complications and when the birth is by cesarean section. This chart shows average charges nationally. You can also view state-by-state charges.

Anyone interested in learning about prepared childbirth is encouraged to attend.

3. Doula Potluck, Birth Stories, & Documentary

In celebration of International Week For Respecting Childbirth, "Birth and Economics," which is May 21-27, 2012, Natural Nesters will be promoting childbirth awareness in the community by having an informational doula potluck, birth stories, and documentary at her residence on Saturday, May 26 from 6:00-9:00 pm. Please bring a dish and birth story to share - the documentary "The Business of Being Born" will be provided. Nursing babies are welcome, but this is a Girl's Night Out event, so childcare should be arranged for older children. Thanks!

15-22 May 2011 in Vienna and Lower Austria

To be able to make a good decision concerning place of birth, OB/GYN or/and midwife and birthing method it is important to collect information and to be aware of all choices you have in pregnancy and birth. Knowledge about your rights as a pregnant and birthing woman strengthens your position in conversation and conflict with doctors, midwives and clinic staff to enforce your demands and ideas. As parents-to-be you are clients and you can accept expertises, advices and assistance, but also have the option to choose freely and determine which medical (routine) measures you or your baby will undergo. Ideally you are sure of what you want and what you don’t want in advance.

After discussing the matter with motivated partners we finalized the theme and date for the World Respecting Childbirth Week  in 2010.

The date will be 16 to 23 May 2010. Please feel free to organize events (reasonably) off-period. As you know, important projects may happily be realized pre- and post-term! The most important thing is to link many events with the campaign and relay them on social networks.

This year's theme will be "BIRTH TRAUMA, BIRTH PLEASURE".

There are many different ways of interpreting this motto and translating it to Roman languages. We feel that it makes it easy to adapt the campaign to priorities perceived by various actors in various countries. "Birth" may evoke women's labour or the birth of a child. Thus it will be possible to focus the campaign on birthing women, parents, families or babies. Needles to say, several meanings may be associated with the words "trauma" and "pleasure".

Please circulate this announcement as widely as possible and translate it to more languages. We look forward to receiving presentations of the theme in various languages as it will be declined in different parts of the world.

Orgasmic birth
USA 2008, 85 min, director Debra Pascali Bonaro

Joyous, sensuous and revolutionary, Orgasmic Birth brings the ultimate challenge to our cultural myths by inviting viewers to see the emotional, spiritual, and physical heights attainable through birth.  Witness the passion as birth is revealed as an integral part of woman’s sexuality and a neglected human right.

Barcelona, 20th. Of April, 2008

Dear Sir or Madam,

I´m writing this letter on behalf of "Plataforma Pro Derechos del Nacimiento" (platform for the rights of birth). This entity, formed by associations and individuals, will be celebrating this year its tenth anniversary.

Our principal target is asking our state health system to take responsibility for the financing of natural birth, regardless of the mother's decision to give birth at a private clinic, a hospital or at home. And above all, that parents will always see their will respected.

We want the recommendations made by the OMS (WHO, World Health Organization) in regard to the rights of the pregnant woman and the baby to be respected in our country, Spain. These recommendations were collected and published by the OMS (WHO) at the International Conference at Fortaleza (Brazil), on the 22nd. and 26th. of April, 1985. Among these rights are the following points:

• The new-born must always be with its mother if they are both in healthy conditions. There should be no medical examination to justify the parting of the mother and the healthy child.
• Breast-feeding should be encouraged as soon as possible, even before the mother and her baby leave the maternity ward.
• Birth giving women should not be lying down on their backs (in the traditional obstetrical position) during childbirth. Women should be encouraged to walk during the dilatation period and be able to choose the position they want to give birth in.
• Childbirth must not be induced for convenience. No birth should be artificially provoked if it is not strictly and medically necessary. No country should have artificial induced births above a 10% rate.

We are aware of the fact that childbirth conditions leave permanent marks in human beings and that the interruption of the natural process of birth interferes in the relationship between mother and child in the short and long run. We would like to spread this information to make it get to as many people as possible.

We intend to spend this year gathering documentation on current investigations in this area.

We would appreciate if you could send us any scientific research in the topic of the effects derived from separating mother and child in the short and long term.

With best regards,

Merche Escursell
